SOFIAA & THE BOGEYMAN – A game for Clinicians and Support Staff

We strongly believe that understanding the people behind the data is a core part of safe, responsible risk management. When you work with real communities, you gain the context that makes data meaningful. When you buy data from vendors without that lived understanding, you inherit blind spots – and blind spots create dangerous misrepresentations.

At SOFIAA, we choose to know the people behind the numbers, because that’s how you build technology that is safe, culturally intelligent and truly worthy of trust. And this is why the SOFIAA Health team is based in Kings Cross, at the heart of the community we serve – Kings Cross, Camden and Somers Town. This game brings our lived experience to clinicians.

Purpose

To help clinicians and support staff understand NHS Digital Clinical Safety principles by experiencing risk, spotting hazard and solving problems together – using real anonymised data from the AI-powered TellSofiaa questionnaire.

How the Game Works

Step 1 — Before the Game: Set up the Sandbox and Complete the TellSofiaa Questionnaire

The SOFIAA team will set you up with your own Sandbox and issue your participants with their unique reference number.

All participants then complete the TellSofiaa questionnaire as if they were a patient/client. This ensures everyone understands:

This step builds empathy and awareness.

Step 2 — Enter the Sandbox

Participants are placed into a safe, simulated environment – the SOFIAA Sandbox – where they role-play as clinicians reviewing anonymised, aggregated data on the TellSofiaa analytical dashboard.

They will see:

This mirrors real-world digital clinical decision-making.

Step 3 — Role-Play as Clinicians

Participants act as clinicians making decisions based on the dashboard. They must:

This builds understanding of model explainability, clinical risk and data interpretation.

Step 4 — Introduce the Bogey Cards

At key moments, the facilitator introduces Bogey Cards — scenario cards that represent things that could go wrong.

Examples:

The team must collectively decide:

This builds collective responsibility, situational awareness and digital clinical safety reflexes.

Step 5 — Debrief

The facilitator leads a structured reflection:
