Human Insight in a Quantum World.

JACQ.IO is my record of the journey as I begin my second PhD, this time in something to do with quantum (still formulating my PhD proposal – algorithmic or building big machines). The ideas I’m wrestling with, the mathematics I’m rediscovering and the joy of learning with a beginner’s mind shaped by a lifetime of experience. It’s a chronicle of curiosity, discipline, and the thrill of starting anew.

And most importantly, celebrating and preserving what’s important in an increasingly technological world: human beings.

I’m Jacqueline, or simply, jacq(.io)

Quantum dynamics generate possibilities; human observers specify questions that shape the resulting reality.

MY QUBITS

Qubits – quantum bits – are the fundamental units of quantum computation. These are my own “quantum bits”: short snippets from my learning journey as I return to physics. Each post captures a small piece of discovery – concepts I’m unpacking, equations I’m revisiting and insights emerging as I become a student again at 58. This is my evolving superposition of curiosity, discipline and late‑life scientific renewal.

HUMANS IN THE QUANTUM LOOP

AI taught us the importance of keeping humans in the loop. Quantum is different: it doesn’t need oversight, only thoughtful design. As a former quant fund manager, a FemTech founder and now a PhD candidate at 58, I see the same truth – humans remain essential in the quantum loop because only we can choose the Hamiltonians, architectures and questions that give quantum systems purpose, direction and meaning.

JACQ.IO’S PERCEPTION LAB

Through thoughtfully designed games JACQ.IO’s Perception Lab helps teams uncover the patterns, biases and assumptions that shape their decisions. Perception Lab turns complex ideas into accessible, playful learning. This is where people come together to understand themselves and each other more deeply—and to build the clarity, curiosity and collective intelligence and risk management needed for a changing world.

ENTRY GATES

Entry Gates marks the beginning of every physicist’s journey: the moment when simple classical truth tables give way to the richer logic of quantum gates. This section is for future physicists standing at their own threshold, learning how classical certainty opens into the extraordinary, probabilistic architecture of the quantum world.

ARTHUR AND TOBY

In quantum physics, Alice and Bob are fictional stand‑ins for communication protocols. Arthur and Toby are the real‑world version: two amigos beginning their journey into quantum physics and chemical engineering while living the full texture of everyday life: sailing regattas, football matches and homework.

poetry for my mathematician

Connection between our states remains invariant under every transformation life applies. Poetry feels natural here because it works like mathematics — compressing complexity into symmetry, pattern and minimal expression. Even at distance, we stay entangled, amplitudes aligned, phases coherent.

My current crazy little project

I have always loved big machines. But these days, I don’t have a sleek particle accelerator, powerful vacuum pumps, strong magnets, a stable proton source, cryo stuff.

But I want to build a single‑qubit simulator on my laptop. Building quantum capability doesn’t always need giant machines hey. I’m starting small: watch this space!

PS. Still undecided if I want to go down this route!!!

But it also excites me to think about the other side of the coin. Doing a PhD to discover a new quantum algorithm. Only a handful of true algorithms exist, each demanding deep mathematical fluency and conceptual discipline. Although I am not a mathematician by training – I am just a humble physicist – learning the mathematics has become a rigorous, exhilarating apprenticeship – one shaped in part by my partner’s mathematical world and my own desire to cross its threshold with integrity, precision and curiosity. I am also taking classes! Follow my journey and learn some very serious mathematics with me along the way in My Qubits and Entry Gates sections of this website, where I make tough maths and physics accessible yet rigorous enough for you to understand quantum to a meaningful depth.
